The main reasons why it is important to create a support gay group for foreigners/ex-pats living in Warsaw:

• When someone leaves their country and hometown heading for an uncertain future abroad there is always some weird sense of a lack of security due to a rupture with the routine of day-to-day life and a frequent feeling of  surprise/maladjustment arising from unexpected habits and traditions of the new environment (culture shock).

• In addition there is the problem of changing the language:  the lack of knowledge of the local one could easily become an obstacle,  not only in everyday life  (work, shopping, entertainment),  but especially when meeting new people and  trying to find a group of friends or at least someone you can talk too.

• If,  on top of that,  we think about a potential rejection due to prejudices of the group which a foreign person is trying join, the beginnings may really be tough: some kind of help, no matter what sort of, may thus be required, even if the support is given by a group of unknowns who are simply willing to listen, share experiences and discuss the ways to pass through this difficult phase in the best possible (easiest and least painful)  manner.

• The venue of the meetings of the Foreigners’ Gay Group is the seat (office) of the Lambda Warszawa Association, Hoża 50/40; the meetings are once a week, on Thursday, from 7.30 to 8.30 p.m.

• Depending on the needs of the participants, we can plan a series of presentations and discussions on the best way to sort out difficulties of a general/everyday nature such as contacts with the authorities, bureaucracy, searching for a job or accommodation, legal or psychological  issues requiring consultation; we can also deal with some more specific topics, such as finding bars, venues or clubs, nightlife in general, sport (swimming, mountaineering, hiking, etc.), which (support) group to join, searching for health services or services of any other kind that the support of a bigger association might make more easily accessible.

• These are just a few ideas for the beginning: the scope of interest of the Foreigners’ Group can be widened at any time, and its activities improved thanks to ideas/contribution of  the group’s participants or the assistance of the Lambda Warszawa Association.
